I chose to post this here instead of the other group because this software list is for Windows. Many folks do not realize what powerful software there is that is free. This software is not just free but open source which means that the code is up for all to use and be peer reviewed. I did a story on CNet UK's list today on my Geeksters.org site: http://www.geeksters.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=727 Pidgeon is a great alternative to proprietary instant messengers and I use it on all my Linux boxes. I wish they would get audio/video going however. GIMP is powerful stuff once you get used to the interface of the program. It reminds me of Amiga software in a way, but it is very powerful for everyday imaging needs. I mentioned NASA World Wind (make sure you have broadband for that one) as a great alternative to Google Earth and it is a program I use on my contract work. Take a look at the list and see if there is anything that is useful to you.
